Seven states – Iowa, Indiana, Montana, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon, and Delaware – are adopting or have already adopted their own personal data laws in 2023, bringing the total number of state data privacy laws in the United States to twelve. Violations may result in civil penalties as enforced by the applicable state agencies. The effective dates for each state’s law range from January 2024 to January 2026.
